Welcome to Memphis Linux

These terms explain what you can and can’t do with Memphis Linux, what we’re responsible for, and what we’re not.

We keep these as plain English as possible. We’re not lawyers; we’re engineers trying to be fair.

In this document both Memphis and Memphis Linux are mutually equal.

1. License & What You Own

Memphis Linux OS License

Most of Memphis Linux is open source under the GNU General Public License v3 (GPLv3).
What This Means:
– You can use it for free
– You can modify it, we can send the links to the source websites
– You can share it.
– You can study how it works.
– You must give credit to original authors.
– If you modify and distribute it, you must share your changes.

Read the full GPLv3: https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-3.0.en.html

Closed Components (Security Only)

Some parts are closed source:
In its core design to respond to enterperise security needs we have close source some of the system Components like:
– Installation & provisioning security mechanisms.
– Secure boot verification.
– Update authentication systems.

Privacy & Integrity Guarantee:
– No Data Collection: These closed components are strictly functional; they do not monitor user behavior, collect personal files, or transmit telemetry data to our servers.
– Integrity Only: Their sole purpose is to verify the cryptographic signature and integrity of system files to ensure your OS has not been tampered with by third parties.

Why:
– These prevent installation attacks.
– Publishing them would expose security vulnerabilities.
– Like a bank not publishing their vault combination.

You get:
– Regular security audits (published).
– Transparent vulnerability reporting.
– The rest of the code open for inspection.

Third-Party Components

Memphis Linux includes software from other projects:
– Linux kernel (GPLv2)
– KDE Plasma (LGPLv2+)
– Applications (various open source licenses)

Each retains its original license. See `/usr/share/doc/` on your system for details.
