Cookie Policy

Last updated: August 2026

This website does not set cookies for visitors. There is nothing to accept, nothing to refuse, and no banner asking you to choose.

1. The short version

You can read every page of memphislinux.com without a single cookie being stored on your device. We have checked this from a clean browser: no cookie is set by the server, and none is set by any script on the page.

This is not a setting we turned on. It is what is left when a site carries no analytics, no advertising and no third-party widgets.

2. What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to keep, so it can recognise your device later. Cookies are not programs and cannot carry malware. They are used for useful things such as keeping you signed in — and for less useful things such as following you between websites.

3. What we do not use

  • No analytics cookies. We removed Google Analytics from this site and did not replace it.
  • No advertising or retargeting cookies.
  • No social media cookies. Our social links are ordinary links.
  • No embedded video, map, or chat widgets, which are a common hidden source of cookies.
  • No consent cookie either — with nothing to consent to, storing your answer would be the only cookie on the site.

4. The one exception: our own staff

Signing in to the administration area sets session cookies, as it does on any WordPress site. Those are ours, not yours: they are strictly necessary for the person signing in, and nobody who is simply reading the site ever receives one.

5. Third-party cookies

There are none.

One third party is still contacted, though it sets no cookies: the site’s typeface is currently served from Google Fonts, so your IP address reaches Google when a page loads. We are moving those files onto our own server, and when that is done nothing on this site will contact Google at all. Files you download are served by DigitalOcean, which likewise sees your IP address but sets no cookie.

These are covered in section 6 of the Privacy Policy.

6. Why there is no cookie banner

Cookie banners exist because a site wants to store something on your device that it needs permission for. Under the GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive that permission is required for anything beyond what is strictly necessary.

We store nothing on your device, so there is nothing to ask about. A banner here would be theatre — and worse, it would have to set a cookie to remember your answer.

7. Controlling cookies yourself

Every browser lets you block or delete cookies, usually under Settings → Privacy. Nothing on this site depends on cookies, so blocking them entirely will not affect your reading of it. If you are signed in as staff, blocking them will sign you out.

If you would like to check our claim rather than take it on trust, open your browser’s developer tools, clear cookies for this domain, and reload any page. The list should stay empty.

8. Changes to this policy

If we ever add something that sets a cookie, we will update this page before it goes live, and we will add a real consent mechanism rather than a notice.
