Four Unique Features Make Memphis Linux Different

Home, is our edition to protect the family. Named (Neithotep) after the first known custodian queen who rule and protected ancient Egypt.

1. Safer Internet

Open DNS works silently in the background, Protect Every One Home*

Open DNS works silently in the background.
Your kids search for something. Open DNS checks it instantly
against a database of millions of unsafe sites. Malware?
Blocked. Adult content? Blocked. Phishing scams? Blocked.
All without notifications, without your kids knowing you’re
protecting them. They experience a clean, safe internet.
You experience the peace of mind you deserve.
No need to spy. No need to check their history. The dangerous
stuff simply never reaches them.

* OpenDNS, is a free service available for home user for free, more info at: https://www.opendns.com/home-internet-security/

2. Screen Time

Healthy device habits. No guilt trips

Screen time isn’t the enemy. Mindless scrolling is.
Memphis Home gives you four simple tools to help your
kids develop a healthier relationship with devices—
without becoming the surveillance parent you never wanted to be.

Healthy rhythm, not a prison
Set a daily limit — say, 2 hours on school nights.
When it’s reached, gaming and social media stop.
But schoolwork? Calling you? Still available.
Your kids keep agency. You keep peace.

Games can wait. Homework can’t..
Different apps, different limits.
Games: 30 min. Homework help: Unlimited.
You’re not saying “no.” You’re saying “yes” to what actually matters.

Better sleep. Better mornings.
Bedtime mode kicks in at a time you set.
No blue light. No secret scrolling at 2 AM.
Kids fall asleep faster. Wake up less grumpy.
You’re not confiscating devices. You’re honoring sleep.

3. Preset Firewall

Protected from day one

Firewalls are technical. But what they do is simple: they decide who gets in and who stays out.

Think of it like the front door to your house.  A firewall is the lock on that door.

Other Operating Systems have a firewall. So does macOS. But by default, it’s weak. Hackers count on this. They probe millions of doors a day, looking for ones that are unlocked.
Memphis Home comes with a firewall that’s already locked.
Tight. Right out of the box.

Here’s what that means: hackers trying to break in won’t get anywhere. Malware trying to phone home and send your data? Blocked. Unauthorized access from the network?
Rejected.

No setup. No fiddling with settings. No security jargon. Just protection that works while your family uses the computer.

4. The Custodian

See what matters, respect privacy

You’re not a spy parent. You’re a protective parent.

There’s a difference. And Custodian is built around it.

Custodian shows you the big picture: how much screen time, which apps are used most, when they’re most active. You see patterns. You notice when something’s off. Maybe they’ve been on Discord for 6 hours straight. Maybe they’re up
until midnight gaming on a school night.

That’s data you should have.

But here’s what you DON’T see: their browsing history. Their messages. Their passwords. Their private chats.
Custodian respects their privacy while helping you stay informed. It’s trust, not surveillance.

And that’s the whole point. Because the kids who feel trusted are the ones who listen when you set boundaries. The kids who feel spied on? They figure out ways to hide.

Custodian gets that.

Questions parents ask us

What is Neithotep?

Neithotep is the family edition of Memphis Linux — a free, privacy-first operating system with built-in parental protection: filtered internet, screen-time limits, a locked firewall, and the Custodian dashboard. It is named after the queen who protected ancient Egypt’s first dynasty.

Is Neithotep really free?

Yes. Free to download, free to use, forever. No hidden costs, no ads, no premium tier — and no collecting your family’s data to pay for it, because we don’t collect anything.

Does Custodian read my child's messages?

No. Custodian shows screen time, most-used apps, and activity patterns — nothing else. It cannot see messages, browsing history, searches, passwords, or take screenshots. Your kids know it’s there; it’s designed for trust, not surveillance.

Do I need Linux experience?

No. Neithotep installs in about 10 minutes, and the desktop looks and works the way people coming from Windows or macOS expect. Apps install from a store with one click — no terminal, no commands.

Will it run on our old computer?

Very likely. Neithotep needs 1 GB of memory and 20 GB of disk space, and it boots to the login screen in under 45 seconds even on modest hardware. It’s a popular way to give an aging family PC a safe second life.

Is Arabic supported?

Yes — fully. The office suite, fonts, and system language support include Arabic out of the box, alongside international language support.

Can it share the computer with Windows (dual boot)?

No. Neithotep takes the whole disk when it installs — Windows and everything else on the machine is erased. Give it its own computer (that old family PC works great), and copy off any photos or files you want to keep first.
